Back in July, HIP alumni Red Wanting Blue performed an excellent rendition of their hit song, "Audition" on Late Night With David Letterman. It's widely known that performing on these late night shows can be hit or miss... but these road warriors took the stage and hit it out of the park to pretty much no one's surprise. Roxiny was born in the Dominican Republic, where she gained her love for music at an early age. Her parents surrounded her with an array of genres from flamenco, salsa to classical and other world/eclectic genres, and soon enough, Roxiny developed her own interests in music. Having been raised in countries such as Italy, Panama, but primarily Spain, Roxiny has gained much appreciation for cultural experiences. Having lived in such exotic places throughout the world, this budding artist has made a large impact on the underground music scene. Her experiences and love for the art of music shine through every one of her songs, and within the video for “Belong,” we get a glimpse of this so-called passion that she owns.

“Belong” is a song that captures the idea that life does not belong to one single person—it belongs to a higher, more imaginative being. Roxiny is seen following a young throughout throughout an exotic forest, and even through a landfill. She then finds her, and their two hands touch, promoting the balance of life and nature. The young girl stands for a metaphor of life, which is hard to get a hold of throughout the chaotic and sometimes anxious filled moments. However, Roxiny’s profound lyrics and captivating vocals transcend contemporary music of today and bring her passions and ideas to a deeper level.

Dezert Eez drop sexy, smooth jam, "Egyptian Musk"

For any of you who are uninitiated into the Dezert Eez camp yet, we’ll remind you with a short backstory. Dezert Eez formed at Western Michigan University, located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with the goal of producing music that held a common approach to the resurgence of underground hip-hop music. Their first recording Declaration of War was a rugged, up-close look at global affairs, hinting at common problems surfacing around contemporary street life. They gained a strong following and enough repertoires to begin performing live, and in no time, they made their music available for listening on the Internet. They received a substantial fan following outside of Michigan, which eventually earned them an opening slot for Wu Tang Clan’s Capadonna tour in 2004.

Fast forward to 2012, has dropped several mixtapes (Call of Duty, We Own The Summer), worked alongside some real heavy hitters in the music world such as Nas, Raekwon, Killah Priest and La the Darkman, and released the acclaimed full length album, Ghettoboxx. Both releases from Ghettoboxx were stellar videos, but as their attention shifts to their upcoming release, Life Illustrated, they are back with a new single, “Egyptian Musk”, that showcases the growth, success and ever poignant rhymes of Dezert Eez.

The “Egyptian Musk” video offers ideas on who Dezert Eez are as artists, and is another top-shelf example of the time and effort this group has put into their craft. The song pertains to the idea of living in carefree manners and celebrating the culmination and payoff of all their hard work on the underground Michigan streets. In the new video they take their hard earned stardom to another level, and we watch as these hip-hop teamsters take partying to a whole new extreme. The video is fittingly 4:20 long, hinting at the carefree lifestyle that they promote in “Egyptian Musk.” As Dezert Eez performs, we cannot help but be mystified by their determination to create music that is feel-good and full of monumental hip-hop surprises. The Lumineers' Album Nears Top 10 on Billboard 200

Like most of the titles on the Billboard chart this week, The Lumineers’ self-titled album sold twenty-one thousand copies on iTunes alone, increasing four slots to a new peak of No. 11. The album, released in April, surpasses the two hundred and fifty thousand sales mark this week.

The album’s hit single “Ho Hey” holds at number three on the Alternative Songs chart for this week. The album also broke into the top forty on the Billboard Hot 100, jumping from spot forty-two to thirty-seven!

The Enchantment of Kelly Padrick

The enchanting stardom of Kelly Padrick’s music is inspiring and groundbreaking. Her music tells stories and tales that are set in contemporary times, but with lyrics that emanate the past, and vocal melodies that can be compared to classic-rock all star, Stevie Nicks, Padrick has made a name for herself within the style and unique fairy tale qualities of her debut video “Tangled Forest.”

Kelly Padrick has been writing songs since an early age, and has performed in the local coffee shops throughout Rhode Island. However, the eager artist decided to spread her love for music and moved to the streets of New York City. Once she arrived, she became enthralled with the underground music scene and began to play local clubs and bars. Her experience in collaborating with various musicians in the New York and Los Angeles area has aided the release of four full-length albums, Haze, Carmine Street, Hello My Love, and her newest album, Soulmate. Her music has been known to deliver feelings of haunting inspiration, complete enthrallment, and clever ideas revolving around love and commitment.

The Brooklyn Hours, a six song EP was prominently featured in ABC’s Desperate Housewives promos during the 2010 season. Her witty and creative song “Pizza and Fairytales,” was featured in the Fox Searchlight movie Trust The Man. Her style captivates the wonders of the contemporary music scene, and her music gives off an aura that is undeniably inspirational. Padrick’s performances not only entertain and enlighten, but they tell stories that are universal to the every day necessities of life. Her most recent video “Tangled Forest” does just that. Directed by Patricia Chica, an award-winning director, producer, and visual artist who specializes in innovative drama and conceptual music videos has carefully crafted a video that accentuates the themes of Padrick’s well-acclaimed song “Tangled Forest.” The video is their seventh collaboration that was filmed throughout various locations within Montreal, and from the premiere at four film festivals this past August, “Tangled Forest” gives us a closer look at all that this theatrical, yet groundbreaking artist has to offer.

The Tangy Sounds of Sonny & The Sunsets

Clearly love and heartache are dominatnt themes and it’s a real life broken heart that was the main influence for Sonny & The Sunsets on their newest album Longtime Companion. They’ve been a welcome breath of fresh air for fans of the Velvet Underground, 50’s rock, early Brit Rock, and all kinds of vintage sounds. Their previous efforts for both Hit After Hit and Tomorrow Is Alright were both terrific indie rock albums that have hinted at a country influence in the past while earning 7.7 and 8.0 ratings, respectively, on Pitchfork. But it’s with Longtime Companion that Smith dives in headfirst into channeling his country music influences.

With elements that echo the country music genre, lead singer Sonny Smith has created a melodic-based structure of songs that capture fleeting moments and images of the past. Sonny Smith grew up exposed to the classy old time records of his parents and his father played banjo around the house, but Sonny admits, “it was around the house, but I didn’t like it.” He was exposed to the likes of the music, but he would resort to the thrash-like rock ballads of AC/DC, or watch the television. However, some sort of country element sunk in to Smith’s inspiration, and in no time he developed sounds that emanated Gene Clark, Johnny Cash, and The Kinks. Sonny formed Sonny & The Sunsets with band members of his country band known as The Fuckaroos. In no time, they recorded an album filled with embellished chords reminiscent of country music in a musty basement. The Sunsets have proved to be a great backing band to the ever-creative Sonny Smith who wrote the songs for their album fast and naturally.

Directed and shot by Sonny Smith himself, “Pretend You Love Me” is an ode to the lost memories of an old love. With a feel-good bass line that pulls you in, the song adheres to the fact that we are all lonesome; through this lonesomeness, sometimes we can’t recognize ourselves, but the song offers a relief for those of us who feel lost. From images that conjure memories of the past, the video moves from scenes around the Californian lifestyle that Sonny Smith creates for us. The song transforms listeners to a beach-like atmosphere, where all is calm and escapable. The tangy sounds suggest music from another time, and it proves how timeless and universal the music of Sonny & The Sunsets truly is.

Soaring Through the Atmosphere with Dusted

Dusted frontman Brian Borcherdt sure knows how to get our attention. And he’s also confident that once he has it, we’re going to like what we hear. After all, you don’t name your other band Holy Fuck without having the goods to back it up, and on that end the band never failed to deliver. Over the course of six years, Holy Fuck has toured relentlessly, building up a loyal fanbase, an acclaimed catalog, and even being included in the hit TV show Breaking Bad. He also founded the Canadian label Dependent Music, which was home to some of Canada’s most sought after releases.

Now emerging from the intertwining cables and broken drum machines of Holy Fuck, Borcherdt brings us Dusted, a project that fulfills his desire to explore a different sound. He teamed up with producer Leon Taheny, known for working on Final Fantasy, Rituals, and Bruce Peninsula, to record the new album Total Dust in a converted garage. Total Dust strips down the mood of past musical influences and presents listeners with a collection of songs that are filled with string arrangements, minimal guitar feedback, and occasional percussion instrument fills. Since their stage performance debut earlier in the spring, Dusted has performed with label mates Deerhoof and of Montreal, and while back in Toronto, they have performed at house parties with fellow friends Army Girls and Odonis Odonis.

It is with their debut video for “Into the Atmosphere” that we can get a glimpse of all that these rising stars have to offer. The video contains a haunting backdrop of a cloudy sky, in which we watch as Dusted performs on a wanton beach. We are introduced to the image of a classy microphone where Borcherdt sings a heartfelt ballad to the sky. Directors Aaron Kopf and Paul Gerretsen present us with scenes of sultry guitars that create a certain vibe that transcends human beings. The fact that the atmosphere is the main focus of the video creates an idea of how small we really are in comparison to the size of the world, and it is with the song “Into the Atmosphere” that we can truly understand the power of the universe and all that it has in store for us.
